Should I buy a 1972 Mercedes and will it cost a fortune?
Hello, I haven't owned a car in years (just moved from NYC to CA). I work from home so I don't need a car for commuting but finding it impossible to get around for basic things without one. I'd love to get this cute vintage car but don't really know what I'm in for. Does anyone know what kinds of problems to expect, how many miles do they normally last etc. Also, am I going to spend a fortune on the maintenance of the car? Good news is the owner now has taken great care of it. It's for sale at $7,000 OBO. Any advice out there?

- my personal thought is that if you are willing to give him $7000 for a 39 year old car (which is probabaly ready to give up the ghost) he will jump for joy and start to believe in god again.
- Mercedes of this age are virtually bullet proof should'nt give you many problems. Check out its service history and make sure all trim items are in good condition, a replacement chrome bumper can cost $2000+. The good news is that you can source any part you need no matter how old the car from Mercedes.
- My advice is, "if you're going to buy an old car, and dont like doing your own repairs, then pass it by". Though it's a mercedes, any car 36+ years old will have issues, unless it has extremely low miles and was garaged all it's life. Any replacement parts will be expensive, plus labor costs could turn this car into a potential money pit. If you can swing a moderate monthly payment, take your 7K and put it down on a new or 1 year old car, from a dealer. At least you'll have peace of mind with a newer car, plus a warranty should still be in effect. good luck in whatever you decide.
- If you don't need a car to get you to work and you like the Mercedes go ahead. If you are a competent shade tree mechanic most repairs are straightforward, although part may be expensive, but obtainable. Also the car is unlikely to lose any value and may even gain in value as a classic. Don't expect it to be trouble free, but if you go in with your eyes open and want the car - enjoy!.
