- If it is taxed the new law from July says it has to be insured or you get an automatic fine
- If the car is kept off the road, there is no requirement for it to be taxed or insured, although if you regard it as a valuable asset, you might feel it worth insuring against the usual domestic risks, possibly under your normal house insurance. The DVLA have a status for cars kept off the road which allows you to register it, without charge as being off the road, then, if it is stolen, the police can quickly identify where it was kept and confirm that you were not responsible for it being on the road.
- waste money? boy are you screwed up, get a clue that vehicle is in your name until someone buys it and registers it in thier name. So to you?, you are liable for every ding, dent , or scrap that car does, this means if some dummy flew off the road and slammed your car onto the highway, or some one test driving it gets in a horrible accident the car is covered. you think your responsibility goes away because you have a new car? no it does not and you are better safe than sorry. I sure hope you have not dropped coverage saving a few bucks?
- If it's off the road and on private property it doesn't have to be insured, but you do have to notify DVLA with a SORN or it will have to be taxed. It will need to be taxed and insured before the new owner drives it away.
- And if somebody wrecks it test driving it, you could lose everything you own!!!
- The change in the Law is that, even if off the road and on private property the vehicle has to be taxed and insured UNLESS it has been declared SORN - which you can do in a few minutes on the dvla website. if is declared SORN then it can be kept off the public highway without being taxed or insured.
- Hello The new law says it must be insured and taxed if it is not Statutory Off Road Notification. Even if on Private Property. Te Tax is done automatically after 28 days from when the tax expires if not renewed. If someone wants to test drive your car the old I have Full Comp does not cover them on your car unless the car is fully road legal itself and that includes Insurance, MOT and Tax. Andy C
- If you don't want to keep the insurance up you must declare it off road (SORN). Then you can cancel insurance. Of course then you can't demonstrate it to a buyer as without your insurance it can't be driven or even parked on the road, even on the buyer's any vehicle clause. Bit ov a buggrance unless you can sell it quickly
- false economy even if you wouldn't need to insure it (which you do) - no one will want to buy a car if they can't test drive it
