Classic cars that are easy to drive?
I really love the look of classic cars, particularly 60’s-70’s vehicles. However I want to own one as a daily driver and feel comfortable behind the steering wheel. I recently drove a 74 Ford Maverick that was for sale, which was a beautiful little car, but I had to pass because while on the road the auto steering felt overly responsive? I’m not sure what to call it but it felt as though I had little control of the car when traveling around 30mph on a slightly curvy road. Very loose and wobbly. I’m not sure if there was something specifically wrong with this car or if the old auto steering is usually like that. If anyone has any idea what I could drive as far as vintage cars go I’d love to hear your suggestions! (Looking for an automatic with power breaking) I don’t know how to drive stick:p

- 68-70 chevy, oldmobile, pontiac, or oldsmobile. My dad has an olds, and it drives good.
- Mustang. Camaro.
- Classic cars are wonderful to own and show off at meets and shows! They are NOT practical daily drivers unless you are a competent mechanic yourself simply due the amount of and frequency of maintenance and repairs which they require. You want to pay a mechanic to replace the points and plugs every 10k? ( around 100 bucks now - IF you can even find a wrench shop with a mechanic who understands setting points and timing! ) Let alone having mechanical tappets requiring adjustment every 15k ( $250 a pop! ) Lets see what else, Brake life expectancy 25k, Water pump and alternator - life expectancy 30-45k, Wheel bearings - Repack EVERY 25k Not to mention exposing your baby to the hazards of daily traffic and parking lots! Get practical! If you can afford to pay cash for a NICE CLASSIC you can afford to have a daily driver, which when it gets rear-ended by the idiot texting you will be able to walk away without regrets! Does this mean you can never take your CLASSIC to work? No, just that you can choose what days you will take it out and protect it from undue risks. Oh and on the handling issue? Every single one of them was a beast to drive in comparison with today's modern vehicles - it is a wonder any of us old timers survived driving them at all! The auto industry did not learn how to design a car with reasonable driving comfort and handling until the early 1980's, oh there were a few exceptions to that rule but none of the Muscle cars were comfortable to drive extended distances, not even the Trans Am! (despite Smokey and the Bandit!) Those comfortable enough to spend the time in handled like a greased pig and those with decent handling were about as comfortable as a wooden bench at the ballpark! ( but the fun made you forget the discomfort - for the most part!) About the only car of that era I would want to drive now is the 1976 Oldsmobile Toronado 455 / Cadillac Eldorodo 500 Cubic inches and 5500 pound of Detroit Iron, Seat an entire Basketball team in comfort ( well the starting line anyway! ) Front wheel drive and all of the comforts we take for granted today, like cruise control and A/C, ride like a limousine and seats which are actually a comfort to be in for hours and hours. Keep your classic where it belongs, on the show circuit and when it is not going to the show - in a locked garage!
- 80s Mercedes-Benz.
